The Financial Services and Markets Authority (FSMA) in Belgium has issued a renewed warning regarding fraudulent WhatsApp groups. Despite earlier alerts, the regulatory authority notes that deceptive schemes operated via messaging channels and social media platforms continue to escalate.
According to the FSMA, the scam typically begins with social media advertisements on networks such as Facebook and Instagram. These ads fraudulently misuse the names and logos of prominent banks and news media outlets to advertise private WhatsApp groups promising exclusive market analysis and high-return investment advice. Once consumers click on these links, they are added to chat groups managed by administrators falsely claiming to be notable economists or investment firm CEOs.
Inside these groups, fraudsters deploy multiple tactics to extract funds and data. Consumers are prompted to participate in lotteries aimed at harvesting personal information. They are also urged to purchase specific US-listed shares in classic "pump and dump" market manipulation maneuvers. Furthermore, participants are encouraged to install fake cryptocurrency and financial trading applications.
The FSMA reported that these groups falsely pose as authorized institutions, including Appollo Global Management, Axiom Investors, Candriam, Harbor Financing, JP Morgan, Saxo Bank, Schwartz School of Business, and Stifel Strategie Consulting Partners. None of these WhatsApp groups have any legitimate affiliation with the authorized entities.
The regulator has identified several fraudulent websites associated with the scam network, including candriambel.com, harborconsult.com, h5.zvjnfdj.com, saxoandroid.top, schwbss.com, wavesolution.com, and web.novaluminous.net. Scammers also attempt to persuade users to install malicious or fake mobile applications, such as CAD INT, HarborFin, JP INVS, Novafms Pro, SiteflGX, and SSB Pro. These entities have been added to the FSMA's blacklist of unauthorized companies operating unlawfully in Belgium.
Investors who have interacted with these groups are advised to cease all communication immediately and make no further payments. Victims should contact their financial institutions to report unauthorized transactions, file official reports with local police and financial authorities, and preserve comprehensive documentation of all messages, statements, and transaction records. The FSMA also warns victims to remain alert to "recovery room" scams, where operators pose as asset recovery specialists to solicit further fees from previous fraud victims.
