The Financial Services and Markets Authority (FSMA) of Belgium has issued a public warning regarding a fraudulent investment scheme involving the identity theft of authorized Belgian banks. According to the regulator, German-speaking fraudsters are reaching out to consumers to offer fraudulent term deposit accounts under the guise of legitimate banking relationships.
To establish credibility, the scammers unlawfully appropriate the names, corporate data, and official registration details of legitimate financial intermediaries, predominantly those authorized in Germany or Switzerland. They then present highly detailed, counterfeit documentation to convince victims that they are establishing a term deposit account directly with a regulated Belgian bank. To attract deposits, the operators frequently market promotional rates, discounts, or special bonuses.
In several instances, the fraudsters create cloned websites using internet addresses that closely resemble the names of authorized intermediaries. These bogus domains often employ minor typographical alterations, such as adding hyphens or switching domain extensions (e.g., using .com instead of .be), or target legitimate firms that do not maintain an active online presence.
To avoid falling victim to these clone and impersonation scams, the FSMA advises investors to independently verify contact details directly against the official registries of relevant supervisory authorities rather than relying on information provided by callers. The regulator also urges consumers to inspect domain creation dates, scrutinize whether contact details and phone numbers match the institution's official country of establishment, evaluate the realism of offered rates, and never transfer money to accounts registered under unrelated third-party names.
