Belgium's Financial Services and Markets Authority (FSMA) has released a public warning regarding an increasing wave of fraudulent WhatsApp groups. Operating across social media networks, cybercriminals are using these groups to lure victims with promises of exclusive market analysis, lucrative investment advice, and high-yield trading opportunities. According to the FSMA, the scheme typically begins on social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. Scammers publish fraudulent advertisements using the names and logos of well-known banks or respected news media organizations without authorization. When users click on these advertisements, they are redirected to WhatsApp groups managed by individuals falsely claiming to be renowned economists, market analysts, or chief executives of legitimate investment firms. Once inside these groups, victims are exposed to various fraudulent activities. Scammers encourage group members to participate in lotteries designed to steal personal identifiable information. They also coordinate pump-and-dump schemes by directing users to purchase specific U.S.-listed stocks to artificially inflate prices. Additionally, administrators heavily promote fraudulent cryptocurrency and financial trading applications. The regulator highlighted that the operators of these groups actively impersonate authorized and reputable financial institutions, including Appollo Global Management, Axiom Investors, Candriam, Harbor Financing, JP Morgan, Saxo Bank, Schwartz School of Business, and Stifel Strategie Consulting Partners. The FSMA emphasized that these entities have no connection whatsoever to the WhatsApp groups. As part of the operation, fraudsters direct targets to several fraudulent websites, which have now been added to the FSMA's blacklist of unauthorized entities operating in Belgium: - candriambel.com - harborconsult.com - h5.zvjnfdj.com - saxoandroid.top - schwbss.com - wavesolution.com - web.novaluminous.net Victims are also coerced into downloading deceptive mobile and web applications, including CAD INT, HarborFin, JP INVS, Novafms Pro, SiteflGX, and SSB Pro. The FSMA advises anyone targeted by or involved in these schemes to cease all financial transactions immediately and break off communication with the organizers. Victims should notify their banking institutions immediately, report the fraudulent activity to local police and financial authorities, and preserve all evidence including chat transcripts and transaction receipts. The regulator also cautions victims to be vigilant against secondary recovery room scams, where fraudsters pose as asset recovery specialists to solicit further advance fees.
