The Financial Services and Markets Authority (FSMA) has issued an urgent warning to the public regarding the rising dangers of fraudulent trading platforms. According to the financial supervisor, these illicit platforms lure consumers with deceptive promises of rapid, low-risk earnings, often leading to substantial financial losses. Fraudulent platforms deploy various aggressive contact methods to reach prospective targets. These include fake celebrity endorsement advertisements, dedicated recruitment websites, fraudulent social media and dating app profiles, unsolicited messages via SMS, Telegram, or WhatsApp, and invitations to exclusive trading groups. Once contacted, victims are directed to an online platform promising unachievable profit rates. After registering, investors are typically instructed to deposit an initial sum, often around 250 euros. In some instances, fraudsters request remote access to the victim's computer or smartphone under the guise of providing technical assistance, enabling the installation of spyware or unauthorized fund transfers. Once funds are deposited, the platform displays manipulated, artificial trading results showing substantial gains. Fraudsters then exploit these fake profits to demand larger deposits through high-pressure sales calls, countdown timers, and threats. When victims attempt to withdraw their capital, the operators fabricate excuses, demanding additional payments for purported taxes, commissions, or administrative fees. Some schemes also adopt pyramid structures, pressuring investors to recruit new members before ultimately collapsing and severing all contact. Victims should preserve all evidence—including correspondence, transaction logs, and screenshots—to file formal reports with local police and regulatory authorities. In addition, victims are warned to remain vigilant against 'recovery room' scams, where secondary fraudsters offer to recover lost funds in exchange for upfront fees.
