The Financial Services and Markets Authority (FSMA) of Belgium has issued an extensive public warning regarding the proliferation of fraudulent online trading platforms. These deceptive operations lure retail consumers with promises of rapid, effortless returns in cryptocurrency, forex, and other financial products, but ultimately lead to severe financial losses.
According to the FSMA, these fraudulent operations follow a structured, multi-stage scheme to extract funds from unsuspecting victims:
1. Initial Outreach and Lead Funnels: Fraudsters capture victim interest using deceptive tactics, including fabricated news articles featuring fake celebrity endorsements, dedicated feeder websites, bogus social media or dating profiles, and unsolicited messages via SMS or WhatsApp. The core hook is always the guarantee of unrealistic, high-yield profits.
2. Onboarding and Remote Access Risks: Victims are persuaded to register and make an initial deposit, frequently around €250. Under the guise of technical assistance or account setup, operators often request remote desktop access to the victim's computer. This practice allows scammers to execute unauthorized wire transfers and potentially deploy malicious software or spyware.
3. Fake Trades and High-Pressure Tactics: Once money is deposited, the trading platform displays manipulated charts and fabricated profits. In reality, no trading takes place on real markets. Account managers then deploy aggressive sales techniques—such as relentless phone calls, artificial time constraints, and threats—to demand increasingly large sums.
4. Withdrawal Obstacles and Exit: While small initial withdrawals may be approved to build false confidence, any request to withdraw substantial capital is blocked. Fraudsters demand additional fees, invented regulatory taxes, or commission payments upfront before completely cutting off contact and vanishing with the client's money.
5. Secondary Recovery Room Scams: Victims of these platforms are frequently re-targeted by recovery rooms—entities claiming they can recover lost funds for an advance fee, which constitutes a secondary fraud.
