The Financial Services and Markets Authority (FSMA) of Belgium has issued a public warning regarding the ongoing proliferation of fraudulent online trading platforms. These illicit operations target consumers with deceptive promises of fast and effortless financial returns, frequently resulting in severe financial losses for victims. According to the FSMA, the fraudulent schemes typically operate through a structured mechanism: 1. Initial Contact and Recruitment: Scammers initiate contact using deceptive online articles featuring fake celebrity endorsements, onboarding funnels, fake social media or dating app accounts, or unsolicited SMS and messaging app texts. Investors are lured with unrealistic claims of rapid, high-yield gains. 2. Registration and Onboarding: Once an investor signs up, they are asked to make an initial deposit, often around 250 euros. In some cases, operators convince victims to allow remote screen-sharing access under the pretense of assisting with the setup, which also exposes victims to malicious software or spyware downloads. 3. Manipulation and High-Pressure Tactics: After funds are deposited, the platform displays manipulated or entirely fabricated investment gains to make the account appear highly profitable. The funds are not genuinely invested. Operators subsequently apply intense pressure through relentless phone calls, time-sensitive offers, or threats to extract larger sums of money. 4. Refusal of Withdrawals: While small initial withdrawals are occasionally permitted to build false trust, larger withdrawal requests are blocked. Fraudsters present various pretexts, such as fabricated transaction fees or unpaid taxes, before ultimately severing contact and disappearing with the funds. Investors should not share further personal or financial details. Victims should immediately notify their banking institutions if money has been transferred and lodge formal reports with both the FSMA and local law enforcement. It is crucial to preserve all records, including chat messages, emails, transaction receipts, and system screenshots. Furthermore, the regulator warns of 'recovery room' scams, where previous victims are contacted by fraudsters claiming they can recover stolen assets for an advance fee, which constitutes a secondary fraud attempt.
