Belgium's Financial Services and Markets Authority (FSMA) has released a public warning regarding the ongoing threat of fraudulent online trading platforms. The financial watchdog emphasizes that these entities operate across the internet, baiting retail investors with promises of unrealistic, fast returns before swindling their capital. According to the regulator, these scam operations follow a structured pattern designed to deceive victims at every stage of the process: 1. Initial Contact: Scammers use several channels to target victims, including fake news articles featuring celebrity endorsements, deceptive online ads, fabricated social media profiles, dating applications, or unsolicited text and WhatsApp messages. 2. Onboarding and Remote Access: Investors are prompted to register and make an initial deposit, frequently around 250 euros. In several instances, fraudsters convince victims to grant remote access to their computers under the guise of assisting with fund transfers, which enables the criminals to deploy spyware or steal funds directly. 3. Fabricated Gains and Pressure Tactics: Once funds are transferred, the platforms display manipulated dashboards showing substantial fake profits. The operators then use high-pressure tactics, including persistent phone calls, bogus limited-time opportunities, and intimidation, demanding further deposits. 4. Withdrawal Obstacles: While scammers may permit a small initial withdrawal to gain the victim's trust, larger withdrawal requests are systematically blocked. The operators demand fictitious taxes or bogus administrative fees before ultimately cutting all communication and disappearing with the funds.
