FSMA Warning: 20 Fraudulent Online Lenders and Clone Firms Exposed

The Financial Services and Markets Authority (FSMA) of Belgium has issued a public warning regarding the deceptive activities of 20 unauthorized lenders offering fraudulent credit services to consumers. According to the financial regulator, scammers are targeting individuals seeking extra funds via social media platforms like Facebook, messaging services such as WhatsApp, unsolicited emails, and deceptive online advertisements. Many of these fraudulent operations operate as clone firms, misappropriating the names, corporate identities, and logos of well-known and legitimate credit institutions or registered intermediaries. These bogus lenders entice victims with highly unrealistic terms, including high borrowing amounts, unusually low interest rates, extended repayment schedules, and the promise of no credit checks. However, once a consumer agrees to the offer, the scammers demand upfront payments under the guise of file-handling costs, administrative fees, authentication charges, or insurance premiums against default. Once these fictitious fees are paid, the fraudsters disappear with the money, leaving the borrower with significant financial loss and no loan.
