The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has issued an urgent warning to the public regarding fraudulent phone calls related to car finance compensation. Scammers are actively impersonating legitimate car finance lenders and contacting consumers with false claims that they are owed compensation payouts.
This wave of fraudulent activity follows the regulator's recent announcement that it will consult on a potential car finance compensation scheme. Seizing on the news, fraudsters are reaching out to individuals to harvest sensitive personal data, including names, residential addresses, dates of birth, and bank account details.
The FCA reminds consumers of two crucial facts:
- There is currently no car finance compensation scheme in place.
- Car finance lenders are not contacting customers regarding compensation at this time.
Consumers who receive unsolicited calls claiming they are owed compensation should hang up immediately and refrain from sharing any personal or financial information. Suspicious calls and text messages can be reported to Ofcom by forwarding them to 7726.
