The Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s (CFTC) Office of Customer Education and Outreach (OCEO) has announced educational events for World Investor Week to address critical and emerging threats in digital and crypto asset markets. Organized globally by the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO), the initiative unites organizations across more than 100 jurisdictions to empower and protect investors.
A primary focus of the regulator's alert is the alarming growth of relationship investment confidence scams, also known as romance investment fraud or pig butchering. Fraudulent syndicates running these operations steal billions of dollars from Americans. Regulators note that these scams have been linked to overseas organized crime networks and fuel an underground economy tied to money laundering and human trafficking.
To address this global threat, the CFTC is hosting a dedicated session titled "Romance Investment Fraud: A Global-Scale Crypto Scam," examining how cryptocurrency flows interact with organized fraud syndicates. Federal regulators are providing insights into the mechanisms of these operations, guiding the public on how to detect red flags and avoid falling victim to manipulative schemes.
Additionally, the CFTC has partnered with the National Futures Association (NFA) to offer anti-fraud webinars detailing regulatory resources and verification tools. Investors are urged to utilize available educational materials to check credentials and safeguard their funds against predatory investment solicitations.
