SEC Charges Overseas Entities Over $15 Million Investment Fraud Schemes Promoted via Messaging Apps
The US Securities and Exchange Commission has filed charges against multiple foreign-operated entities behind investment confidence scams totaling at least $15 million.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has initiated enforcement actions against several entities believed to be operated by individuals based overseas for their roles in investment fraud schemes that misappropriated at least $15 million.
According to the regulator, the perpetrators targeted hundreds of retail investors, including individuals residing in the United States, through investment confidence scams. The operators allegedly utilized messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, alongside other digital channels, to contact potential victims and establish trust before pitching fraudulent investment opportunities.
The regulatory agency highlighted that these schemes relied on manipulative tactics to lure investors into committing significant capital. The SEC continues to pursue bad actors engaging in cross-border fraud and warns market participants to exercise caution regarding unsolicited investment solicitations on encrypted communication platforms.
