FCA Launches AI Live Testing Initiative with Major UK Financial Firms
The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has launched a pioneering AI Live Testing initiative designed to help financial firms deploy artificial intelligence safely and responsibly within live financial markets. The program, described by the regulator as the first of its kind in the financial sector, provides participating institutions with tailored regulatory guidance alongside technical assistance from Advai, a UK-based firm specializing in AI testing, evaluation, and system assurance. The inaugural cohort of participating firms comprises major retail banks, insurers, and fintechs, including NatWest, Santander, Monzo, Scottish Widows (part of Lloyds Banking Group), Gain Credit, Homeprotect (part of Avantia Group), and Snorkl. According to the FCA, the live testing environment aims to assist firms in refining evaluation frameworks, live monitoring, governance structures, and risk management protocols to protect consumers and maintain market integrity. Many of the initial test cases focus on retail financial services. These include using AI to support debt resolution, offer financial advice, enhance customer engagement, accelerate complaints handling, and help consumers make informed saving and spending decisions. Jessica Rusu, Chief Data, Information and Intelligence Officer at the FCA, stated that the initiative enables firms prepared to introduce AI into live markets to do so with comprehensive oversight, helping the regulator understand how AI is transforming UK financial markets while shaping future regulatory approaches. The AI Live Testing service builds on the FCA's existing Supercharged Sandbox, which caters to firms during the earlier discovery and experimental phases. Applications for the second cohort of the AI Live Testing scheme will open in January 2026, with live testing scheduled to begin in April 2026. The regulator reiterated its approach to oversee AI adoption primarily through existing regulatory frameworks rather than introducing separate, redundant rules.
