ESMA Appoints Carlos San Basilio to Management Board
The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has appointed Carlos San Basilio of Spain’s Comisión Nacional del Mercado de Valores (CNMV) to its Management Board. He will take the seat held by Carlo Comporti, who is stepping down from the board to become ESMA Chair, effective 1 November 2026. The election took place at a meeting of ESMA’s Board of Supervisors in Paris on 6 October 2026. San Basilio’s appointment and Comporti’s move to the chairmanship will both take effect on 1 November. From that date, the Management Board will also include Thorsten Pötzsch of Germany’s Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin), Marie-Anne Barbat-Layani of France’s Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF), Christopher P. Buttigieg of Malta’s Financial Services Authority (MFSA), Peter Tkáč of Slovakia’s National Bank (NBS), and Armi Taipale of Finland’s Financial Supervisory Authority (FIN-FSA). ESMA Executive Director Natasha Cazenave will serve as a non-voting member, while ESMA Vice-Chair Vojtěch Belling will attend as an observer; a European Commission representative will also be a non-voting member. The Management Board is chaired by the ESMA Chair and is responsible for ensuring the authority carries out its mission and tasks under its founding regulation. The board’s membership change coincides with Comporti’s transition from his role representing Italy’s Commissione Nazionale per le Società e la Borsa (CONSOB).
