CFTC to Host Industry Roundtable on 24/7 Derivatives Trading
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) will host an industry roundtable on Dec. 15 to discuss whether derivatives markets can viably move to 24/7 trading, extending the regulator’s consideration of the issue following a request for comment earlier this summer. The public discussion will examine evolving market structures, including overnight trading, tokenization, infrastructure requirements, staffing needs and operational readiness. Participants from across the derivatives industry will consider how the CFTC can support responsible innovation while protecting market participants and maintaining the integrity and resilience of U.S. derivatives markets. CFTC Chairman Selig said the regulator would avoid applying a uniform approach to 24/7 trading across markets. “Market structure evolves best through thoughtful and responsible progress,” Selig said, adding that the roundtable would give the Commission an opportunity to hear industry views on continuous trading across different asset classes. The event will be held at the CFTC’s headquarters in Washington, will be open to the public and will be livestreamed on CFTC.gov. The Commission said details on the agenda, speakers and registration would be released later. In-person attendance may be limited, visitors will be subject to security checks, and members of the public may submit speaker nominations to [email protected].
