CFTC Holds Inaugural Innovation Advisory Committee Meeting on Crypto, AI, and Prediction Markets
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission held the inaugural meeting of its Innovation Advisory Committee to address regulatory developments in crypto, AI, and prediction markets.
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) convened the inaugural meeting of its Innovation Advisory Committee (IAC) in Washington, D.C., bringing together innovators, market practitioners, and policy leaders to examine emerging technologies across the financial sector.
The IAC was created to advise the Commission on complex issues spanning technology, law, policy, and finance. The advisory council provides insights and practical recommendations designed to help the regulator ensure its regulatory framework keeps pace with rapid technological developments in derivatives and broader financial markets.
Opening the proceedings, Michael J. Passalacqua addressed members, noting the Commission's commitment to engaging experienced voices from the industry. Following these remarks, IAC Chair Walt Lukken addressed the committee, emphasizing that the body's objective is to provide practical, experience-based counsel rather than advocating for specific business models, market participants, or technologies.
CFTC Chairman Selig delivered remarks highlighting the strategic importance of market innovation, stating that technologies including blockchain, artificial intelligence, and prediction markets are actively reshaping market structures. Selig underscored the necessity of regulatory leadership in establishing standards for the evolving financial landscape.
The committee engaged in discussions on several key subject areas, including the regulatory evolution of cryptocurrency, the integration of artificial intelligence and compute within derivatives trading, and the development of prediction markets and novel event contracts.
