CFTC Deploys Nasdaq Surveillance Platform to Upgrade Market Monitoring and Fraud Detection
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission has adopted Nasdaq’s market surveillance technology to replace its legacy systems and enhance cross-market oversight across derivatives and digital assets.
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has announced the deployment of Nasdaq’s market surveillance technology suite to modernize its oversight and fraud detection infrastructure. The platform upgrade replaces the agency's 1990s-era legacy system as the regulator adapts to an expanding regulatory remit across traditional and digital asset markets.
The deployment fulfills a commitment made in March by CFTC Acting Chairman Caroline D. Pham to secure upgraded surveillance systems to modernize the agency. The Nasdaq platform will introduce automated alerts and cross-market analytics across all CFTC operating divisions, enabling regulatory staff to analyze market trends and detect unusual or disruptive trading activity more efficiently.
Acting Chairman Pham stated that the new suite of solutions is critical for the CFTC to stay ahead of rapid market changes and technological integration. She emphasized that the tools will enhance the agency's capability to safeguard markets from fraud, manipulation, and abuse while increasing operational efficiency across its divisions.
The CFTC is responsible for supervising a wide spectrum of derivatives markets, including currencies, commodities, fixed income, event-based markets, and crypto assets. With the agency expanding its digital asset focus and responding to market developments such as continuous trading hours, advanced analytical capabilities have become essential for maintaining market integrity.
According to Nasdaq President Tal Cohen, the surveillance technology is currently utilized by over 50 exchanges and 20 international regulators. The architecture offers transaction-level analysis, multi-asset manipulation pattern detection, and real-time order book monitoring designed to scale during high-volume and volatile market conditions.
